1524: Not Jean de Poitiers, father of the mistress

On this date in 1524, the French aristocrat Jean de Poitiers, Seigneur de Saint Vallier lay his head on a chopping-block. He kept it there for a full hour, but the headsman never swung the blade — and Jean de Poitiers walked away with a royal clemency.
