THE DAILY REFORMER (NEW YORK, UNITED STATES)
The world has seemingly gone mad. We tried to impeach for former president. (The effort failed, but did it really?) We’re still focused on restrictions instead of vaccine distribution. I could go on for a while, but the biggest sign of our corporate madness I have seen yet is this story:
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) recently encouraged teachers to register for training that encourages “ethnomathematics” and argues, among other things, that White supremacy manifests itself in the focus on finding the right answer.
An ODE newsletter sent last week advertises a Feb. 21 “Pathway to Math Equity Micro-Course,” which is designed for middle school teachers to make use of a toolkit for “dismantling racism in mathematics.” The event website identifies the event as a partnership between California’s San Mateo County Office of Education, The Education Trust-West and others.
Part of the toolkit includes a list of ways “white supremacy culture” allegedly “infiltrates math classrooms.” Those include “the focus is on getting the ‘right’ answer,” students being “required to ‘show their work,’” and other alleged manifestations.
Over at Powerline, Hinderacker tried to approach this nonsense reasonably but I just can’t. It’s simply madness. The first thought that ran through my mind was that I would hate to drive across a bridge designed by a guy who thought getting the right answer in math was somehow racist. Such a discussion is pure, unadulterated nuts.
So this morning, Sunday morning, I looked at Isaiah 40. It is a lament about the state of things, particularly the nation of Israel:
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to live in;
who brings princes to naught,
and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.
Sometimes I want to ask the same question. Do you not understand how the world works at all? But the prophets lament ends so familiarly and beautifully:
but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
I cannot make sense out of our current situation, in my local community, in my nation, or in the world. But I can know that God is at work. I can wait on Him.
