THE DAILY REFORMER (NEW YORK, UNITED STATES)
Colorado City, Texas Mayor Tim Boyd, who claims to have resigned prior to going on a social media rant Tuesday, told citizens the city and county owe them nothing and they should fend for themselves as they were freezing in extreme cold without power.
On Tuesday, Boyd took to Facebook to post a typo-riddled attack on citizens calling his office for help, local station KTXS reports:
Tuesday morning, Boyd voiced his frustrations about residents who he said called him to complain about power and water outages.
“If you don’t have electricity, you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe,” Boyd said. “Get off your ass and take care of your own family!”
Other inflammatory comments by Boyd include:
- “No one owes you or your family anything; nor is it the local governments responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim, it’s your choice!
- “The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!”
- “Your (sic) lazy is direct result of your raising!”
- “Only the strong will survive and the week (sic) will perish.”
- “If you have no water you deal with out and think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family.”
“I won’t deny for one minute what I said in my post this morning,” Boyd wrote later that day, apologizing for his earlier post:
“I apologize for the wording and some of the phrases that were used!”
“I was only making the statement that those folks that are too lazy to get up and fend for themselves but are capable should not be dealt a handout,” Boyd added.
Boyd claimed that he was making his original comments as a private citizen, because he had already resigned. But, media report that the timing of his resignation is unclear. According to The Dallas News:
“Boyd also wrote that he had already turned in his resignation as the mayor of Colorado City, a town of 4,000 people about 230 miles west of Dallas, and was speaking only as a citizen, not an elected official. It was unclear when exactly he had resigned; a City Council agenda posted on the city’s website showed that he was scheduled to lead last week’s meeting.”
As of this post on Wednesday afternoon, the city’s website still lists Boyd as mayor.
Screenshots of Boyd’s posts are available on the website of local Texas NBC affiliate News West 9.
