Newsmax reported yesterday that Iran has decided to restrict U.N. access to the State nuclear program. Go figure. Is Iran going back on a deal? Who’d have guessed that?
Almost fifteen years ago—after losing a football game, many thought the Arizona Cardinals should win—former head coach Dennis Green stood at the podium, taking typically tough questions lobbed at NFL personalities. He exploded at one particular question, answering with an oft-quoted response, “they are who we thought they were.” The same should be said of Iran’s nefarious regime.
Anyone surprised to hear that Iran has decided to restrict access to United Nations inspectors is either deluding themselves or complicit in wanting the inevitable chaotic outcome. Bullies only understand one language; fighting. You can’t appease a bully. Whether it’s on the playground, the basketball court at lunch recess, or the world stage of international diplomacy, giving in to a bully’s demands never pays off.
Iran has been roughly the same bully since the brutal regime change in 1978 – 1979. I’m not here to defend the Shah. He had his own problems. At the same time, we have forty-plus years of evidence to demonstrate precisely who and what Iran’s ruling class is. If President Biden and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believe that Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei deserves a softer approach, they are as deluded or complicit as Neville Chamberlain was with Hitler.
Yes, it’s a strong statement to compare Khamenei to Hitler. I have no evidence of any mass genocide on the scale of the Holocaust. Frankly, neither did Prime Minister Chamberlain in 1938, when he signed the Munich Agreement. Still, we are watching our current American administration either appeasing or cozying up to the likes of totalitarian regimes like Iran and President Xi Jinping’s China.
Either we are witnessing the definition of insanity or the best game of 4D-chess ever played. For the record, my money is on the latter. It’s patently absurd to think that appeasement will work ‘this time.’
What evidence from the last forty years suggests Iran has warranted a softer approach? Weren’t we told that President Trump was a constant danger with access to the nuclear codes? How many wars did Trump get the United States into?
I seem to remember then-candidate Biden claimed he would take a strict approach to adversarial countries. CNBC reported on January 22, 2021, that Biden’s policies would effectively mirror his predecessor. On February 9, 2021, MSN said Biden would be tough on Iran. It doesn’t sound like Biden’stough talk’ is working with news of U.N. inspectors being denied or restricted in accessing the Iranian nuclear program. Perhaps, I’m missing something. Maybe, Biden will show how ‘tough’ he is by laying a devastating trap for Khamenei and Jinping. How many of you want to take bets on that?
If Iran’s regime is ‘we thought they were,’ maybe Biden’s administration is ‘who we thought they were too.’ It would be insanity to assume Iran will suddenly turn over a new leaf. We shouldn’t expect any different from President Biden either. All talk and no action. He is ‘we thought he was.’
As always, this has been the World, According to Chris.
